Of all the stupidity, of all the rank, gross, crawling, jelly-mouthed stupidity!  He had never seen the like of it in his life!  Bringing the children up without so much as an ounce of imagination!  Where was the fun in being children if you didn’t imagine things?

-Pillar of Fire, by Ray Bradbury

. . .the dark morning sky lay frozen in cold starlight.  A breeze sped through the pale woods, weaving through trunk and bramble till it spilled out upon the open countryside.  It hugged the exposed land, charging over rolling hills, unopposed.  The willow leaves shook above Mikel’s home, scratching against the tin siding.

A memory, cold and powerful mounted in the distance, its shadow swallowing entire villages in two heartbeats.  Closer and closer it came.
